Shot an axis doe this year and decided I wanted to keep the hide. Skinned it and cleaned all the meat and junk off and salted it for a few days.. What can I do to the hair side to get rid of the smell and clean the hair up. shampoo??

As long as it's salted good, there is no need for keeping it cold. The salt takes care of the bugs that rots the meat and destroys the hair folicles.
Take the crispy salted hide and wash off all the salt, then pickle it. Make sure you run it in a buffer bath to knock down the PH in the hide after you pickle it.
For a soft hide to snuggle under, you would have to send it off and get it tumbled at a tannery.

did you finely get the answer you wanted for tanning the deer hide ? the ( pickle ) is salt water and acid. to soften use a water based oil . before the oiling stage, wash in baking soda bath for 15 minuets .
